Alvin Curran - Fiori Chiari Fiori Oscuri
-----------------------------------------
http://rapidshare.com/files/292367294/Alvin_Curran_-_Fiori_Chiari_Fiori_Oscuri_MP3.zip

Alvin Curran was one of the members of the Musica Elettronica Viva collective, along with Fred Rzewski, Richard Teitelbaum and others.

Curran's first solo album, Songs and Views of the Magnetic Garden, was originally released in 1975, and consisted of largely improvised live electronic and acoustic drone music. Fiori Chiari Fiori Oscuri was released a short while later, and continues in a similar vein, with more soundscapey tapes, vintage synths, and acoustic instruments.

Side one starts with recordings of a cat purring, and then goes through a long series of electronic synthy drone bits, with occasional soundscape recordings underneath the synths.
Side two goes through a lot of change in its 28 minutes, starting with Alexis Rzewski speaking (I'm guessing he was Fred's young son). It goes into some toy piano, then quite a bit of super-fast minimalist piano playing, in the vein of LaMonte Young & Charlemagne Palestine's piano music. The piece ends on some nice improvised jazzy piano, which fades into electronic chimes and tapes of dogs barking.

While Songs and Views was rereleased on Catalyst, a subsidiary of BMG, in the mid-90s, Fiori Chiari has remained out of print for the past 30 + years, never released digitally. Shame. It would be really great if someone out there collected all of these 70s Curran LPs together and rereleased them.

Musica Elettronica Viva - Leave the City
-----------------------------------------
http://www.mediafire.com/?5cb0mngdrbd

""Musica Elettronica Viva or MEV as they're sometimes called, were founded by Ivan Coaquette (pre-Spacecraft), and also included his wife, Patricia and Birgit Knabe, as well as various other collaborators along the way. The music we find here is an extremely experimental form of electronic jazz which is not a million miles away from the styles of early German Krautrock bands such as Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. Originally issued in 1970." This was the second of 2 MEV albums to released by BYG in 1970, following The Sound Pool (which featured Alvin Curran, Richard Teitelbaum & Frederic Rzewsi amongst others). It features floating, droning free music freakouts of the finest cosmic quality and this reissue is a major event by any sensible standard. A note of explanation from Frederic Rzewski about the various incarnations of MEV: "In 1968/69 MEV experimented with audience participation and took on a number of new younger people, many of whom were not musicians. We wanted to see how far we could extend the idea of free improvisation, surrounding the core group with people who happened to be around. The group expanded and spawned separate communities. In the early 70's there were three MEV's: one in Rome, led by Alvin Curran; one in New York, where Richard Teitelbaum was based; and one in Paris, which was organized by the Coaquettes. Birgit and Nona were members of the Living Theatre, with whom we also hung out a lot, and Stefano was one of the younger acolytes. Nobody ever found out really who was in MEV. At that time, it was part of a movement, and that part of it that was a part of the movement lived and died with that movement."

" This album hangs out and is groovy. Noises and textures and stuff. Not your typical "Electronic" type record. I would like to play in one of these bands. This record is good enough that I accept the extra vinyl noise during the last 2 and a half minutes of each side. This was from a nice little crack that sunk into the grooves a bit. "

Composers and synth players Paul Beaver and Bernie Krause were among the most high-profile electronic music acts of the late '60s, recording a series of LPs distinguished not only by their groundbreaking studio advances but also by the presence of notables including Gerry Mulligan and Mike Bloomfield. Krause -- a onetime member of the legendary folk group the Weavers -- was working as a staff producer at Elektra Records when he met Beaver, a former jazz musician; under the name Beaver & Krause, they began assembling electronic pieces employing spoken-word passages, acoustic instruments, tape loops and improvisational techniques, debuting in 1968 with The Nonesuch Guide to Electronic Music. After 1969's Ragnarok Electric Funk, the duo issued In a Wild Sanctuary a year later; 1971's Gandharva -- recorded live in San Francisco's Grace Cathedral and featuring cameos from Mulligan and Bloomfield as well as Bud Shank and Ronnie Montrose -- was the most popular of their releases. After 1972's All Good Men, Beaver recorded the solo LP Perchance to Dream; sadly, it was his final work -- he suffered a fatal heart attack on January 16, 1975 at the age of 49. Krause later resurfaced as a noted expert in environmental sound recording. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Statistics in Musicology (Interdisciplinary Statistics)
--------------------------------------------------------
Publisher: Chapman & Hall/CRC | ISBN: 1584882190 | edition 2003 | PDF | 312 pages | 8,16 mb (rar'd 6,7 mb)

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=19JPEFIP

The study of music by means of mathematics dates back centuries, however applications of statistical methods to questions in musicology and performance research are still very rare. The advent of "intelligent" music software, computer digitization, and other advanced techniques and technologies has precipitated the need for standard statistical models to answer fundamental musicological questions. Statistics in Musicology offers an unprecedented introduction to statistical and mathematical methods developed for use in music analysis, music theory, and performance theory. This unique book explores concrete methods for data generation and numerical encoding of musical data. It addresses topics ranging from simple descriptive statistics to formal modeling by parametric and nonparametric processes. Self-contained chapters present methods in one of two categories: classical methods of mathematical statistics and exploratory data analysis, and new methods developed specifically to answer questions in musicology.Bach may not have approached composition with the systematic intent of Schönberg's 12-tone works, but analyzing his music can certainly be approached mathematically. Presenting numerous illustrations and examples of music spanning from the 12th to the 20th century, Statistics in Musicology summarizes various ideas proven to be useful in musical analysis and provides the basis to conduct your own analyses.Jan Beran is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Konstanz, Germany. He is also an accomplished concert pianist and composer.

Music, Language, and Cognition: And Other Essays in the Aesthetics of Music

Music, Language, and Cognition is the third collection of Peter Kivy's seminal papers in the philosophy of music. In essays which span his earliest work in the field and his more recent contributions to journals, anthologies, and conference proceedings, Kivy considers the origin of music, the medium of expression in opera, the role of music in film, the nature of an "ideal" performance, and the question of whether absolute music has a meaning, among other issues. Rich with critical analysis and informed by the history of both philosophy and music, this volume will be of interest to anyone who likes not only to listen to music, but to think about it as well.

Byron Almin - Approaches to Meaning in Music (Musical Meaning and Interpretation)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pages:239 | PDF | Indiana Univ Pr (November 2006) | ISBN 0253347920 | 3.5 MB

http://rs467.rapidshare.com/files/195474053/ApproaMusic.rar

"Approaches to Meaning in Music" presents a survey of the problems and issues inherent in pursuing meaning and signification in music, and attempts to rectify the conundrums that have plagued philosophers, artists, and theorists since the time of Pythagoras. This collection brings together essays that reflect a variety of diverse perspectives on approaches to musical meaning. Established music theorists and musicologists cover topics including musical aspect and temporality, collage, borrowing and association, musical symbols and creative mythopoesis, the articulation of silence, the mutual interaction of cultural and music-artistic phenomena, and the analysis of gesture. Contributors are Byron Almen, J. Peter Burkholder, Nicholas Cook, Robert S. Hatten, Patrick McCreless, Jann Pasler, and Edward Pearsall. Dr. Almen is currently an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at The University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of several articles on narrative theory, the music of Gustav Mahler, music and psychology, early 20th century Germanic culture, and music pedagogy. He is also an accomplished pianist and organist. Dr. Pearsall is currently Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Texas at Austin. He is known internationally as a performer, composer, and scholar and has published numerous articles on subjects ranging from prolongation in tonal and post-tonal music to theories of rhythm, interpretation and performance, and biological approaches to the study of music and the mind.

It’s a match made in heaven. Two of the most innovative and influential producers of electronic music join forces for a very special project.
For the last few months Detroit legend Carl Craig and Berlin’s dub-techno originator Moritz von Oswald have been busy recomposing three pieces from an original recording of the Berlin philharmonic orchestra from 1987, conducted by Helmut Karajan.
The quite simply breathtaking result will hit the shops on October 17th as the third part of the ’ReComposed’ series (Mathias Arfmann and Jimi Tenor were responsible for the first two parts) on Germany’s renowned jazz label ’Deutsche Grammophon’.
Having to chose from the immense back catalogue of Deutsche Grammophon, the pair finally decided to recompose one of the biggest classical hits around: Maurice Ravel’s ’Bolero’.
But not just that, they also recomposed Ravel’s ’Rapsodie Espagnola’ and Modest Mussorgsky’s ’Bilder einer Ausstellung’.
As mentioned before, those three piece were taken from an original recording from 1987, and Craig and von Oswald had the original multitracks at their disposal.
To recompose a classical standard like ’Bolero’ is a huge challenge, but Moritz von Oswald (who studied classical music) and Carl Craig show their combined musical skills.
Reducing and abstracting the three classical pieces to their bare bones and creating something entirely new, while at the same time staying close to the original.
I wonder what people with a more classical background will make of this project.
Of all the attempts to fuse electronic and classical music (Jeff Mills ’Blue Potential’ or Maxence Cyrins ’Modern Rhapsodies’ for instance), to me, this is the most hypnotic and persuasive.

- 2009
